Rob Rowland

Rob Rowland

Rob Rowland was born and raised in the Midlands during the 50s-60s in an environment of cobbled streets, gas lamps, back yards, canals and railway viaducts; and all he ever wanted to do was to work somewhere in the professional art industry.

Working first for a picture restoration studio, Rob went on to graduate from Gloucestershire College of Arts & Technology and began work as a freelance graphic designer, followed with employment in the art department of a national brewery designing and painting traditional inn signs.

It was not long after he became fascinated with depicting railways and other aspects of the UK’s industrial heritage, becoming a full member of the Guild of Railway Artists in 1987, and then began working independently in 1991.

Rob’s work is celebrated internationally for its ability to evoke the romance of travel and the power of steam, often focusing on the mid‑20th century era when Britain’s railways were undergoing great change.
