B-26 'Dinah Might', piloted by Major David Dewhurst leads a formation of Marauders of the 386th BG, 9th Air Force - with freshly-applied invasion markings - to Normandy in support of Operation Overlord, escorted by P-51Bs.

Despite the initial sluggish resonse from Luftwaffe fighters, casualty figures in the air steadily mounted in the weeks after D-Day, resulting largely from the barrage of intense flak that greeted almost every bomber raid. Between the 6th and 30th June the Allied air force lost more than 1,200 aircraft during the fighting in France, with more than 300 of those attributed to the 9th Air Force.

This vibrant original painting by Anthony Saunders, completed in 2012, pays tribute to the valiant aircrew of the 9th and the mighty B-26 - an underrated and underpainted aircraft, yet pivotal to the success of the D-Day landings.
