GEORGE ‘JOHNNY’ JOHNSON - Original Pencil Drawings
by Richard Taylor
We’re delighted to have in stock this stunning tribute to the last surviving airman to take part in Operation Chastise, George ‘Johnny’ Johnson.
Johnny finished a full tour with 97 Squadron as Bomb Aimer with American pilot Joe McCarthy, he and his crew were then selected to join the newly formed 617 Squadron to undertake the legendary Dambusters Raid, Flying Lancaster AJ-T ‘Tommy’, they attacked the Sorpe Dam, but as their Lancaster wasn’t fitted with the twin Aldis lights needed to accurately gauge their height, it took several runs before ‘Johnny’ could release their bomb – scoring a direct hit! Completing a further 19 special missions with 617 Squadron he flew a total of 50 Ops, finishing the war as an instructor.
Completed in Richard Taylor’s trademark technique combining a mixture of graphite with colour highlights on antique buff paper, both original drawings have been expertly framed to full conservation standards to include an original pencil autograph of the legendary man himself;
