HANG TOUGH - Original Oil on Canvas
by John D. Shaw
December 1944 saw freezing cold weather in Belgium. Under fierce German artillery fire, without proper winter clothing and with limited rations and supplies, Easy Co. were soon encircled by the Germans. However, between 1 – 13th January the company took control of the Bois Jacques woods near Foy and later captured the town.
This stunning painting by one of America’s foremost Military artists, John D. Shaw, depicts men of the 101st Airborne deep in the Bois Jacques forest. Captain Dick Winters supports his men with the words: “Hang Tough”. Despite being surrounded and ill-equipped, the Band of Brothers would hold the line. Ultimately, the 101st Airborne would help turn the tide in the Battle of the Bulge.
