HUNTERS OVER THE CHANNEL – THE LUFTWAFFE
OUT OF THE BLUE
Original oil on canvas by Anthony Saunders
As part of the force escorting a large formation of Luftwaffe bombers heading over the Channel, a group of Bf109 fighters from JG3 open their throttles ready to dive on a section of Hurricanes from 32 Squadron spotted in the distance below, 24 August 1940.
It had been a tough few months for the pilots of Fighter Command’s 12 Group – outnumbered, outgunned and increasingly fatigued, they’d suffered heavy losses as the Battle of Britain ground its way through that long sweltering summer of 1940. And today would be no different – the battle-hardened Luftwaffe pilots of JG3 are about to dive on ‘Blue Section’ Hurricanes of 32 Squadron and a new phase of the battle is about to begin with bombs soon to fall on London.
It’s easy to see why Anthony is widely considered as one of the world’s leading aviation artists and so highly respected for his depictions of aerial conflict during the Battle of Britain. This latest painting was recently completed as part of a stunning pair – the other depicts Hurricanes of 32 Squadron and has already sold so we’re sure it won’t be long until this Luftwaffe piece also finds a new home.
