SPEEDBIRD DUSK ARRIVAL - Original Oil on Board

A striking original painting by Henry Smith AGAvA, depicting British Airways Concorde G-BOAG descending to land in the UK at sunset.

Concorde has held a fascination for Henry since childhood, growing up in southern England during the 1980s and 1990s and seeing the aircraft both on approach and at airshows. He recalls the combination of its grace, power and unmistakable sound, with the aircraft’s elegant ogival wing remaining one of the features he finds most compelling to paint.

Henry constructed the composition using several photographic references, while the dusk lighting came from memory. The deliberately softened background keeps attention firmly on Concorde itself, emphasising the aircraft’s distinctive form as it descends with landing gear lowered.

Speedbird Dusk Arrival was exhibited at the Guild of Aviation Artists’ 50th Annual Exhibition at Imperial War Museum Duxford in 2023, where it was Highly Commended in both the Aviation Painting of the Year and Arthur Gibson Memorial Trophy categories. It also appeared in Airliner World magazine in connection with the exhibition.
