Post-WWII Signing Event with artist Keith Burns - 20th March
For this event we'll be joined at the Wendover by veterans who served after the second world war, flying various modern aircrafts alongside one of the leading artists in the industry.
Our special guests include:
Aviation Artist KEITH BURNS - Keith is an award-winning aviation artist and illustrator. He has illustrated comics for the past decade with Johnny Red being the most recent. Keith's ability to deliver the power and drama of a scene never fails to capture the imagination and makes him one of the most exciting artists in the industry.
Squadron Leader CHRIS BULTEEL - joined the RAF in 1985 and on completion of training, was posted to fly the Tornado F3 at RAF Leeming. He was deployed to RSAF Dhahran for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm with XI(F)Sqn. After a posting to the Central Flying School (CFS) at RAF Scampton and subsequently RAF Topcliffe, he was posted to 25(F) Sqn for his 3rd F3 tour during which he was deployed on numerous occasions to the Gulf. He later completed the USAF Predator Flying Training Unit and became the RAF's first MQ9 Reaper pilot serving with the USAF in Standards and Evaluation. He then served as XO 39 Sqn and OC STANEVAL prior to joining 92 Sqn. In 2018, Sqn Ldr Bulteel became the 2 FTS Air Safety Manager at RAF Syerston.
Master Aircrew TERRY RUMBLE - joining the RAF in 1971 as an air radar fitter, Terry began his flying career with 120 Sqn flying Nimrod Mk1s and Mk2s with 201 Sqn. After a brief period with 202 Sqn flying Sea King SAR helicopters, he was seconded to Sqn 3 of the NATO AEW Force in Germany, for the period of Gulf War 1, flying NATO E-3A aircraft from Antalya and Konya FOBs in Turkey. Shortly after his return he was one of the first crews to fly the RAF E-3D with 8 Sqn. During this time he spent almost 10 years flying Ops covering the Bosnian and Kosova wars. He was later posted to 23 Sqn, again flying the E3-D where he served during Gulf War 2 and Afghanistan conflicts before leaving the RAF in 2005.
Captain IAN BLACK - flew tours on the Phantom, Lightning and Tornado. He was the last RAF pilot to qualify to fly the Lightning, and also spent 4 years with the French Air Force flying the Mirage 2000. He flew operations in the Gulf and Bosnia, flying over 250 combat sorties. He is currently a Senior Captain on the A340/A330 and still flies the Lightning at ‘Thunder City’, South Africa.
Flight Lieutenant STEPHEN WILLIAMS - joined the RAF in 1975 as an Airman. His first posting was to RAF Honington in Ground Radio Flight. Steve pursued his Officer training at RAF Henlow and his Navigator training at RAF Finningley. Posted to 231 OCU and the 100 Sqn Canberras at RAF Marham. During his posting at RAF Coningsby, Steve ejected from his F4 Phantom XV434 on 7th January 1989. Following his rehab and recovery, he was posted to Nav School as an Instructor and ended his service career at E3D AWACS at RAF Waddington with 8 and 23 Sqns.
Wing Commander MICHAEL RUSSELL OBE MBA - Mike planned and commanded the Release to Service trials of the Air Launched Anti Radar Missile (ALARM) on Tornado GR1 conducted by No 32 Joint Trials Unit at the US Naval Weapons Centre at China Lake, California in 1990/91. ALARM was successfully employed by the Tornado force in Gulf War 1 as its prime Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) weapon. He then flew operationally as a Navigator on Shackletons and Nimrods on 201 Sqn becoming a Captain and subsequently Navigation Leader with 120 Sqn at Kinloss. He also served at HQ Strike Command, RAF Staff College, Air HQ Episkopi, Cyprus and with the MoD Procurement Executive.
Corporal ROBERT HARTLEY - joined the RAF in September 1979 as a Flight line mechanic and after initial training at RAF Halton was posted to No1 (F) Harrier GR3 Sqn at RAF Wittering in January 1980. Robert was then posted to RAF Gutersloh in Germany in 1982 with No 4 Sqn Harrier GR3 reconnaissance. From Germany he completed 4 month tour to RAF Stanley in the Falkland Islands in 1983 working on the Harrier GR3 that were carrying Air defence against further potential Argentinian invasion. After returning to UK for Airframe technician training, Robert continued to work on the Harrier GR3 & GR5 in Belize, Germany and Turkey followed by a short tour on Puma Helicopters prior to leaving the service in 1994.
