MOSQUITO THUNDER - Framed Collector's Piece
by Anthony Saunders
As the late afternoon sun dips towards dusk, Mosquitos from 105 Squadron race for home following a successful strike on the railway workshops in Trier, 1 April 1943.
de Havilland’s Mosquito was one of the fastest, most versatile piston-engine aircraft of the war, designed from the outset as an aircraft that relied on speed rather than guns for defence. Powered by twin Merlin engines it was fast, highly manoeuvrable, and possessed the range to roam over enemy-occupied territory almost at will. Even more remarkable, with metal alloys in short supply, most of its fuselage and wings were constructed of balsa and lightweight ply, a unique feature that led to its affectionate nickname ‘The Wooden Wonder’.
In tribute to all those who flew this magnificent aircraft, our expert framing team have included the original pencil autographs of two highly-regarded Mosquito veterans within the conservation matting:
- Air Marshal Sir Ivor Broom KCB CBE DSO DFC AFC
- Flight Lieutenant Doug Hadland
