Michael Wittmann became a cult figure in Germany during WWII due to his accomplishments as a highly skilful and much-feared Waffen-SS tank commander. He is perhaps best known for the devastating action at Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944 when ambushing elements of the British 7th Armoured Division. His direct and determined approach later cost him his life – he died in Normandy on 8 August 1944, aged 30.

Completed in Richard’s trademark combination of graphite with subtle colour highlights on antique-style buff paper, this remarkable piece shows a mighty Tiger tank running through a ruined village in Normandy.

We’re rarely able to offer original wartime autographs of this nature but we’re delighted to feature this highly detailed pencil drawing by Richard Taylor, framed to full conservation standards to include a genuine fragment of German barbed wire recovered from Normandy, and the photograph and fully authenticated signature of:

  • SS-Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittmann
