As the silver moonlight glints on the wave tops below, Guy Gibson leads the first wave of Lancasters low across the North Sea.

In one of the finest paintings of his career, leading aviation artist Anthony Saunders has completed one of the most compelling Dambuster images of recent years. With silver moonlight glinting on the wave tops below, Gibson leads the first wave of Lancasters low across the North Sea to avoid enemy detection, each aircraft with its unique ‘bouncing bomb’ designed by Barnes Wallis, hanging below the fuselage. In formation with ‘Mick’ Martin on his port side and ‘Hoppy’ Hopgood to starboard, Gibson heads towards the Dutch coast en-route to the Möhne and Eder Dams.

As a lasting tribute, this superb piece is adorned with the signatures of FOUR veterans who were involved in the raid and expertly framed to include an ORIGINAL piece of aluminium fuselage recovered from Lancaster AJ-M flown by Flt Lt John Hopgood on the night of the raid, plus museum-quality reproduction RAF wings:

  • Squadron Leader Les Munro CNZM DSO QSO DFC
  • Squadron Leader George Johnson MBE DFM
  • Dr. Mary Stopes-Roe
  • Corporal Maureen Stevens
