SBD Dauntless bombers from the USS Yorktown dive into action to deliver the coup-de-grâce to the Japanese carrier Shōhō during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 May 1942.

It looked tough, and it was. Handling like a dream and with an impressive range, the SBD Dauntless could, thanks to its near-vertical dive capabilities, deliver its potent bomb load with pinpoint accuracy. Best remembered for its role in sinking four Japanese carriers during the Battle of Midway, the Dauntless was one of the finest and most-feared dive-bombers of the war and acquired the nickname ‘Slow But Deadly’ by many who flew her.

Adding great authenticity, this stunning drawing has been framed to full conservation standards to include the original autographs of two famous names who took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea:

  • Lieutenant Commander Dick Best
  • Rear Admiral Lewis 'Lew' Hopkins
