We're proud to feature this reflective conversation with retired RAF Air Marshal Black Robertson ahead of our upcoming event ‘85 Years On’ to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain!

9 September 2025

Chris Thompson sits down with Black to explore the importance of remembering, the strength of the human spirit and what we can learn from the ‘Greatest Generation’. As well as how Black’s latest book came to be… ‘The Shy Assassin’: The inspiring story of Cyril ‘Frank’ Babbage, Battle of Britain Spitfire Ace turned D-Day Mosquito pilot.

Over a 36-year career, Black Robertson flew all of the RAF's front-line fast jets and qualified as a helicopter pilot, with postings in Bahrain, the USA, Germany, and the Falklands. Holding several key leadership roles, including commanding No. 92 Squadron and serving as Station Commander at RAF Wattishame, he also completed five tours in Whitehall and was appointed an Aide-de-Camp to HM The Queen.

An accomplished author, Black has published several works, with the ‘The Shy Assassin’ being his fifth and latest project. Beyond writing, he’s served as a trustee of the David Vaisey Library Prize, a mentor with the Cranfield Trust and remains an ambassador for the National Spitfire Project.
