Anthony Saunders - BATTLE OF BRITAIN Prints
With the release of Anthony Saunders' latest portfolio 'HUNTERS OVER THE CHANNEL', we thought this to be the perfect opportunity to cast our gaze back through his entire Battle of Britain catalogue from 2008 onwards!
HIGH SUMMER
On the 9th September 1940, Number 92 Sqn was thrown into the Battle of Britain. They had fought bravely during the evacuation from Dunkirk, and after a spell on convoy patrol, they were thrust into the desperate climax of the greatest air battle in history.
HOMEWARD BOUND
After another intense day of combat for the seasoned pilots of JG-26, one stricken fighter is relieved to see the unit's legendary commander Adolf Galland closing in for an escort back across the channel.
FEAR NOTHING
The Battle of Britain is at its height but the threat of invasion is still a deadly reality. RAF Blenheims from 105 Sqn make another strike against German troop barges assembling in the northern French port of Boulogne whilst escorting Hurricanes of 501 Sqn engage in a savage tussle with Me109s of JG3.
MERLIN CHORUS
Spitfires of 152 Sqn, with the distinctive sound of their Merlin engines echoing around Lulworth Cove, return to their base at Warmwell to re-fuel and re-arm after a successful encounter over Me110s and Me109s attempting a raid on Portland.
LONGEST SUMMER
Harvesting is briefly interrupted as Mk.I Spitfires of 609 Sqn pass low overhead. The young pilots return to 10 Group Sector Station at Middle Wallop after successfully engaging Luftwaffe raiders attacking naval facilities on the south coast, August 1940.
DECISIVE BLOW
During the final days of the Battle of Britain Pilot Officer Geoffrey Wellum from 92 Sqn based at Biggin Hill, banks his Spitfire after scoring a direct hit on a Ju88 bomber from KG77 over the Medway Estuary, on a day of heavy Luftwaffe raids against London, 27 September 1940.
CHANNEL STORM
Mk.I Spitfires of 610 (County of Chester) Sqn scramble away from Biggin Hill and head towards the Channel where a fresh wave of Luftwaffe raiders has been plotted heading for Fighter Command airfields, late August 1940.
BACK FROM THE FIGHT
At the height of the Battle of Britain, Spitfires from 610 Sqn return to base to re-fuel and re-arm after a tense encounter with Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf109 fighters, 12 August 1940.
HURRICANE HERO
With the Battle of Britain fast approaching its climax, Flight Lieutenant Tom Neil and the Hurricane pilots of 249 Sqn make a dramatic head-on attack against a large force of Heinkel He111s from 5./KG26 heading for London, 11 September 1940.
HEADING INTO ATTACK & OUT OF THE BLUE
Having left their forward airfield at RAF Hawkinge, Flight Lieutenant Pete Brothers leads the Hurricanes of 'Blue Section', 32 Squadron to intercept a large force of over a hundred Luftwaffe aircraft approaching over the Straits of Dover.
As part of the force escorting a large formation of Luftwaffe bombers heading over the Channel, a group of Bf109 fighters from JG3 open their throttles ready to dive on a section of Hurricanes from 32 Squadron spotted in the distance below.
✅ Mounted to full conservation standards to include museum-quality reproduction RAF & Luftwaffe wings respectively, and the ORIGIANAL autographs of two highly-respected pilots who flew with either side during the Battle of Britain! ✍️
