BATTLE OF BRITAIN & RAF FIGHTER BOYS – 9th APRIL

We are delighted to announce that we’ll be joined at the new Wendover Gallery by Battle of Britain veterans as well as WWII RAF fighter pilots.

9 April 2017

Our special guests include:

Wing Commander TIM ELKINGTON - serving with 1 Sqn on Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain, he scored a victory over a Bf109 before being shot down whilst intercepting a raid on Tangmere. After a spell with 601 Sqn, he joined 134 Sqn flying Hurricanes in Russia, being awarded the Ushanov Medal. After a time with MSFU, he flew with 1 and 197 Sqns on Typhoons, and 67 Sqn on Hurricanes in India. He also shared the destruction of a Do215 and two Ju88s and received the Burma Star.

Chief Technician JOE RODDIS - after his training as a Flight Engineer was cut short due to the outbreak of war, he became one of the countless ‘unsung heroes’ serving as ground crew during the Battle of Britain, with 234 Squadron at Leconfield and Middle Wallop as Engine Mechanic to leading Battle of Britain Ace Bob Doe. He later joined 485 (NZ) Squadron, also equipped with Spitfires, becoming a Chief Technician there until the end of the war.

Squadron Leader ALLAN SCOTT DFM - joined 124 Sqn at Biggin Hill in 1941 flying Spitfires before serving in Malta with both 603 and 1435 Sqns, again on Spitfires. Here he was credited with at least 5 victories and 2 probables before returning to the UK and joined 122 Sqn flying P-51 Mustangs over Europe. His final tally was 6 victories.

Warrant Officer EDMUND CREEGAN - upon completing pilot training he joined 243 Sqn in 1942 flying Spitfires as part of 322 Wing. He flew across North Africa and southern Europe and on one occasion in June 1944, when ground-strafing in Italy, he was shot down and taken PoW. Managing to escape, he was picked up by Russians and eventually made it back to the UK.
