Matted Battle of Britain Pieces

by Richard Taylor...

5 February 2021

These three matted Battle of Britain pieces by Richard Taylor are sure to please the eye, featuring both Spitfires and Hurricanes, PLUS they're signed by veterans who actually took part!

Some moving tributes to the small band of RAF Fighter Pilots who repelled the mighty German Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940.

UNSCHEDULED ARRIVAL

September 1940, and Mk1 Spitfires from 19 Sqn have been ordered south to engage heavily escorted Luftwaffe bomber formations heading for the Thames Estuary and London. Following intense fighting the Spitfires’ ammunition is expended, and low on fuel the squadron makes a hurried landing at a forward airfield to replenish empty tanks and re-arm. Within minutes they will be airborne again. Together with the uninviting waters of the Channel, the RAF were the only thing stopping an invasion by Hitler’s all-conquering Panzers.

This detailed Limited Edition print has been personally signed for posterity by three highly-regarded RAF veterans who took part in the battle:

  • Sqn Ldr TONY IVESON DFC AE
  • Wg Cdr TERENCE KANE
  • Wg Cdr TOM NEIL DFC* AFC AE

Our expert team have then mounted this special copy to include the original autographs of a further two famous Spitfire pilots who flew during that long summer:

QUIET REFLECTION

Time is precious for the young off-duty fighter pilot and his girl as they pause to watch Spitfires from 92 Sqn pass low overhead. It is a brief moment of respite during the height of the Battle of Britain and tomorrow he’ll be back in combat.

It's no surprise that this memorable print has continued to prove popular since original release in 2015. At the time, it was personally hand-signed by two of the last surviving RAF pilots to take part in the battle:

  • Sqn Ldr GEOFFREY WELLUM DFC
  • Wg Cdr JOHN 'TIM' ELKINGTON

Our expert team have mounted this Limited Edition to full conservation standards, ready to slip into a frame of your choice.

COLTISHALL SCRAMBLE

Mk.I Hurricanes of 242 Squadron, under the command of Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, scramble from Coltishall during the height of the Battle of Britain.

Acknowledging the vital role played by the pilots who flew the famous Hurricane during the summer of 1940, Richard's superb piece recreates a relative moment of calm as the brave young RAF pilots will soon be in action, intercepting Luftwaffe raiders heading to targets at Duxford and North Weald.

Adding great authenticity, this Limited Edition has been personally signed and authenticated by two veterans who flew Hurricanes in combat during the Battle of Britain

  • Air Cdre JOHN ELLACOMBE CB DFC*
