New Release: ESCORT TO NORMANDY
A new limited edition print by Anthony Saunders, commemorating D-Day & the Normandy Invasion...
On her first operational sortie and carrying full D-Day markings, Mk. IX Spitfire NH341 DB-E ‘Elizabeth’ from 411 (Grizzly Bear) Squadron RCAF helps to escort a force of some 220 Lancasters on a raid to bomb the docks at Le Havre harbouring German E-boats, 14 June 1944.
The raid depicted to Le Havre was Bomber Command’s largest daylight raid of the war so far and in the cockpit of Elizabeth was pilot ‘Bruce’ Whiteford who had named the aircraft after his wife. Whiteford went on to fly her on more missions than anyone else and described the operation as ‘bags of flak and fire’.
Each print in the edition has been personally signed by artist Anthony Saunders and serves as a fitting tribute to both the brave airmen who flew Elizabeth during WWII and all those who fought to liberate Europe.
