FIGHTER PILOT SIGNING EVENT – 13th AUGUST

We are delighted to announce that we’ll be joined at the Wendover Gallery by pilots who flew RAF fighter aircraft during WWII.

Our special guests include:

Warrant Officer EDMUND CREEGAN - upon completing pilot training he joined 243 Sqn in 1942 flying Spitfires as part of 322 Wing. He flew across North Africa and southern Europe and on one occasion in June 1944, when ground-strafing in Italy, he was shot down and taken PoW. Managing to escape, he was picked up by Russians and eventually made it back to the UK.

Warrant Officer GEOFF HULETT - volunteered for the RAF in late 1941 aged 18 and completed pilot training before joining 225 Group in India as a ferry pilot delivering aircraft in support of the Allied air attacks against the Japanese. He flew many types of aircraft including Spitfires, Hurricanes and P-47 Thunderbolts. He was awarded the Burma Star.

Flight Lieutenant ALAN DAVIS - joining the RAF in 1943 he trained in America before returning to the UK to fly Spitfire Mk.XIVs with an OTU. He then joined 225 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flying Spitfire Mk.IXs and stayed with the squadron until the end of the war. After the end of hostilities he remained with the squadron, first at Klagenfurt in Austria, then Udine in Italy, and served briefly with 253 Sqn.

Lieutenant KEITH QUILTER DSC RN - helping form 1842 Sqn in 1944 he served on board HMS Formidable equipped with Corsairs and attacked the Tirpitz three times; twice on strafing missions and a third dive-bomb attack. Sailing to the Far East with the British Pacific Fleet to support US Navy operations, he flew at Okinawa and was involved in sweeps and ground attacks on Japanese airfields on neighbouring islands. Whilst in the Pacific he was shot down attacking a Destroyer but rescued by a US submarine.

Special Guest signer:

Flight Lieutenant DAVID ASHOVER AFC - an evacuee during WWII he joined the RAF as an apprentice electrical fitter in 1947 at RAF Halton. After graduating he applied for aircrew and trained as a pilot in southern Rhodesia before returning to the UK and converting to Jets. He was one of the first pilots to fly Canberras with 9 Sqn and after a spell instructing was posted to 213 Sqn in Germany before returning as an instructor and test pilot on Canberras.

Entry to our Gallery events is FREE but for safety reasons it is important to RESERVE YOUR TICKET IN ADVANCE. Unfortunately, on event days, we can't allow entry to anyone who hasn't reserved a place. Even if you're not 100% sure that you can make it, please book your place in advance and if your plans change, just let us know.
