The Great Escape
On the night of 24 / 25 March 1944 a daring escape took place from Stalag Luft III, a prisoner of war camp holding captured Allied aircrew. The audacious break-out was the largest of its kind during WWII and involved the construction of not one but three tunnels, nicknamed Tom, Dick and Harry. In the end only Harry was used, built beneath Hut 104 under the noses of their German guards.
We're delighted to offer these memorable pieces recounting the trials and tribulations that took place at Stalag Luft III:
THE GREAT ESCAPE
Framed Remarque by Keith Burns
As prisoners attempt to make a stealthy dash to the nearby treeline beyond the perimeter fence, an eagle-eyed sentry raises the alarm and suddenly chaos reigns at the exit of 'Tunnel Harry'.
Personally signed by actor JOHN LEYTON who played Willie Dickes 'The Tunnel King' in the 1963 film, this unique copy has been returned to Keith's studio and hand embellished with an original acrylic Remarque in the lower border.
