CIRCUS ON THE DOWN LOW - Original Oil on Canvas

This powerful original oil painting by James Dietz vividly captures the chaos and intensity of Operation Tidal Wave - the daring Allied low-level bombing raid on Ploesti, Romania, 1 August 1943. The scene depicts B-24 Liberator bombers braving fierce anti-aircraft fire and thick smoke as they target the oil refineries vital to the Axis war effort. This raid would become one of the costliest missions for the USAAF in the European Theatre during WW2, with 53 aircraft and 500 aircrewmen lost.

Despite its mixed results, the raid is celebrated as a testament to Allied determination to disrupt the Axis war machine at all costs and is often remembered as an example of incredible bravery and sacrifice. Five Medals of Honor were awarded to participants.
