On the 16th August 1940, eight Ju87 Stukas of 8./StG1 attack the ‘Chain Home’ radar station above Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight.

This vital facility, essential to the RAF in detecting incoming raids, would be put out of action for some time. Four days earlier, conventional bombing by Ju88s had done little damage. However, now the Stuka demonstrates its remarkable accuracy in its purpose-built dive-bombing role by destroying all of the underground buildings and all but two of those above ground.

Oberleutnant Gunther Skambraks’ Stuka has just released the single bomb, as the aircraft begins to break from its near vertical dive. All eight Stukas soon headed back across the channel having accomplished the most successful raid of its type during the Battle of Britain.
