SURPRISE ATTACK
by Robert Taylor
Whilst attacking a B-17 formation southeast of Berlin on April 10th 1945, Oberleutnant Walter Schuck, flying his Me262 with JG7, is caught in a surprise attack by the P-51 Mustang of Flt Lt Joseph Peterburs.
"It was a milk run until we got over the target, then the B-17's dropped their bombs and simultaneously we were hit by a swarm of Me262’s, turbo jets, about fifteen of ‘em. I latched onto one (piloted by Walter Schuck) that had just taken out a B-17, and from 5,000ft above I rolled over to close the gap. Just as I got in the 6 O’clock position he blew up his second B-17 - so I started firing and managed to hit his left engine, which started to burn and smoke, right before he dived beneath the clouds…” - Colonel Joe Peterburs
In dramatic fashion Robert Taylor skillfully portrays the moment just after Joe Peterburs has struck Walter Schuck's left engine. Unknown to him at the time - he would be added to the prestigious ranks of the few Allied 'Jet Hunters' claiming a destroyed Me262 by the end of the war...
