At 3:55 p.m. on AUG 14 1945 in Times Square New York City, sailor George Mendonsa grabs dental hygienist Greta Zimmer and plants a big kiss on her. At approximately 1 p.m. it was announced on the news that the Japanese had surrendered - World War Two was finally over.
All the bars were serving free drinks and the celebrations went on until the next morning.
