IN CLOSE SUPPORT - Original Pencil Drawing
by Robert Taylor
With ground forces pouring ashore below, P-51 Mustangs offer support to C-47s carrying U. S. Paratroopers as they head inland towards their drop zones on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
It began shortly after midnight when two American and one British Airborne Division started to drop into Normandy with the mission to secure the flanks for the mighty amphibious armada heading towards the invasion beaches. As dawn broke to reveal the bullet-swept beaches below, overhead the skies were still filled with troop-carrying aircraft heading inland as the airborne assault continued.
Adding great authenticity, Robert’s superb piece has been completed on archival drawing paper personally signed by two U.S. Paratroopers who served with the famous 101st Airborne Division as the Allies pushed for victory in Europe:
- Private 1st Class SALVADOR 'SAL' PEREZ
- Sergeant WILLIAM 'BILL' GALBRAITH
