Standing proudly at the heart of our Aces High gallery in the ancient village of Steventon is a full-size replica of a unique warbird – a Mk.IX Spitfire resplendent in the personal markings of a very special fighter pilot – Air Vice Marshal James ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, the Allies’ top-scoring Ace in Europe, the man who shot down 38 enemy aircraft during World War II. 

We are privileged, therefore, that our Gallery has been entrusted with the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity of handling the sale of Johnnie’s own personal set of miniature medals – nineteen of the highest awards that reflect his long and distinguished career of gallantry and leadership both during and after war. These impressive awards include the Order of the Bath, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the DSO and two bars, the DFC and bar, the US Legion of Merit and the French Croix de Guerre. This prestigious set of medals is offered for sale matted alongside an original pencil portrait of Johnnie completed by his long-standing friend, the late Robert Taylor.

Remembering that ‘Johnnie’s’ full set of nineteen medals sold at public auction for £241,500 in 2002 – setting a new world record for a set of combat medals at the time – the sale of his nineteen miniatures will enable one amongst the many collectors of aviation memorabilia across the world to acquire this equally rare but more affordable set.
