Tom Porta

Tom Porta

Tom Porta is a contemporary Italian artist born in Milan in 1970, where he continues to live and work. Trained as a Maestro d’Arte, he initially built a successful career in illustration and photography before devoting himself fully to painting in 2003. Having lived in Italy, Germany, France, Japan and the United States, Porta draws heavily on these experiences, combining figurative realism with a more expressive, layered approach to surface, colour and atmosphere. His work has entered major private collections and appeared in auctions including Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

History, particularly the conflicts and upheavals of the twentieth century, forms an important thread throughout Porta’s work. Rather than treating historical subjects as straightforward illustration, he often uses them as a way of examining memory, sacrifice and the passage of time. Aviation has featured prominently within this wider interest, including his acclaimed Shinpu Tokkotai Project, inspired by Japanese kamikaze pilots, and his broader W.A.R. – We Are Restless series exploring the human experience of conflict.
