ACE OVER NORMANDY - Framed Collector's Piece
by Anthony Saunders
Before turning for home at the end of a long day providing beachhead cover on D-Day, Don Laubman and Spitfires of 412 Sqn RCAF witness the scene on Utah beach as men and armour from the U.S. VII Corps continue to pour ashore. Over the next few months, Laubman became one of the top-scoring Aces of the Normandy Campaign.
Portrayed are the Mk.IXb Spitfires of 412 Squadron RCAF, one of the 55 Spitfire squadrons that took part in D-Day air operations between 5 and 7 June 1944. Tasked with providing cover, Anthony depicts the squadron at the end of a long day shortly before they finally turn for home after a final sweep to encompass the scene over Utah beach where men and armour from the U.S. VII Corps continue to pour ashore. In the foreground is the Spitfire of Don Laubman who would become one of Canada’s top-scoring Aces.
In recognition of the role played by the courageous Spitfire Pilots of the Canadian Wing on D-Day, this superb piece has been matted to include the original autographs of the famous Ace depicted and the highly-regarded leader of the Wing on D-Day:
- Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson CB CBE DSO** DFC*
